Frequently asked questions about cat food

To help you find the right nutrition for your cat, here are the questions our customers ask most often, to support you in making your decision. If you have any other questions, feel free to come chat with our team in-store.

There is no perfect food. What matters is that it suits your cat and provides the nutrients they need, especially animal protein. Here are the main formats available:

  • Cat kibble is the most affordable and convenient option. It provides all the essential nutrients but requires you to pay closer attention to your cat’s hydration.
  • Wet cat food is naturally rich in water, which supports your cat's hydration and urinary health, but costs more than dry food.
  • Raw cat food relies on real meat to provide a diet that closely mimics what cats eat in the wild, but it requires careful handling.
  • Freeze-dried cat food offers an alternative to raw in a light, freezer-free form, which makes it easier to store and serve.

If your cat has specific needs or if you would like personalized advice, we recommend reaching out to your veterinarian.

Watch for a few signs to make sure the food you are giving your cat suits them:

  • A shiny coat and healthy skin, with no redness or itching.
  • A good energy level and a stable weight over time.
  • Firm, regular stools with no vomiting, both signs of good digestion.
  • A healthy appetite and steady interest in their meals.

If you have any doubts, or if one of these signs concerns you, talk to your veterinarian.

Their food should be rich in animal protein, ideally listed as the first ingredient, and contain taurine, fatty acids and minerals. To make sure your cat gets these essential nutrients, AAFCO has set minimum standards that most popular brands meet.

Cats are strict carnivores, which means animal protein matters even more for them than for dogs, since animal-based ingredients provide a large share of the amino acids they need for good health.

Yes, wet food offers many benefits for your cat. Cats naturally drink very little, since they are used to getting their water from the food they eat.

Wet cat food is generally made up of about 75% moisture, compared to around 10% for kibble, which helps complete their daily hydration and support urinary health.

This does not mean dry cat food should be avoided, but combining both formats can be very beneficial for your cat's health. The key is to always keep fresh water available for your cat.

How much to feed your cat depends on the format you choose, along with their weight, age and activity level. Start with the feeding chart on the packaging, then adjust based on these factors.

Keep an eye on how their weight changes over time. It is an excellent indicator of whether you are feeding too much or too little.

Keep in mind that cats prefer to eat several small portions throughout the day rather than one large meal. If you are unsure about amounts, talk to your veterinarian.

Not all brands are the same, and the perfect brand does not exist. What matters most is making sure the food you choose meets AAFCO standards. The most popular brands generally meet these criteria and make a solid choice. Here are a few of them:
