Frequently asked questions about clumping cat litter

To help you choose the best clumping cat litter, here are the questions our customers ask us most often. If you are still unsure, come chat with our team in-store and we will be happy to help.

Clumping cat litter is a type of litter, usually made from clay, that forms solid clumps as soon as it meets your cat's urine. Unlike non-clumping litter, this makes cleaning much easier. You simply scoop out the clumps without having to empty the whole box.

Scoop out the urine clumps and waste every day to keep your cat's litter box fresh. With clumping litter, you simply add a little fresh litter as needed and empty the entire box about once a month, depending on how many cats you have. Good upkeep extends the life of the litter and keeps your home pleasant by limiting odours. You can also use a litter deodorizer for extra freshness if your cat tolerates it.

For most adult cats, clumping litter is safe. It can be riskier for kittens though. When they discover something new, they tend to explore it with their mouths and may swallow litter, which can block their digestive systems. Some adult cats do this too. In both cases, it's best to choose a non-clumping litter, such as silica-based litter, absorbent litter, or natural litter.

If you suspect your cat has swallowed litter and starts vomiting, we recommend seeing your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Yes, several clumping litters are made from natural materials instead of clay. Wood pellet cat litter is an excellent natural option. It clumps well, controls odours and is light to handle. Other formulas made from corn, wheat, or husks also clump nicely while being biodegradable and often compostable. These are great ways to lower your environmental footprint without giving up a clean litter box.

There is no single best clumping cat litter. The perfect choice depends on your cat, your priorities, and your budget. Here are a few options to discover at Mondou:
