History and Origin

The Golden Retriever is a hunting dog that was developed in the United Kingdom, more specifically in Scotland, in the mid-19th century. At that time, the high society was hunting duck and waterfowl, a very popular sport, but the dogs that were used for it did not meet the needs of hunters. That's when the Tweed Spaniel, now extinct, and other hunting dogs, such as the Flat Coated Retriever, were crossed to create the Golden Retriever we know today. It is a powerful and versatile hunting dog, both in water and on dry land. The Golden Retriever is the third most popular breed in Canada and the United States.

Physical appearance

The Golden Retriever is a large breed dog reaching between 23 and 24 inches (58 - 61 cm) at the shoulders for the male and between 21.5 and 22.5 inches (55 - 57 cm) for the female. The average weight of an adult Golden Retriever is normally between 60 and 75 lbs (27 to 34 kg), depending on the gender and size of the animal. The Golden Retriever takes its name from the colour of its coat, a golden blond. On the other hand, its hair can be declined in several tones, going from the almost white blond to a mahogany red. The Golden Retriever has a semi-long, waterproof coat with a good amount of undercoat, as well as beautiful fringes under the belly, behind the legs and a nice full tail.

Longevity and health

The Golden Retriever has an average longevity of 10 to 12 years. This breed is known for its health problems, such as hip and elbow dysplasia, heart disease, eye problems, dermatitis and ear infections. It is also prone to several types of cancer, which unfortunately is the leading cause of death for this breed. It is therefore important to regularly bring your dog to the vet to make sure he gets the best care quickly if health problems occur.

Energy level and temperament

Although being a hunting dog at first, the Golden Retriever is a breed with a medium energy level. This type of dog likes to work with his owner, and as he is very obedient, he therefore excels in obedience trials. This is a breed that can adapt to various different lifestyles, such as a very active family or a family with young children. Of sweet and affectionate nature, the Golden Retriever is ideal for families who are welcoming a dog for the first time. In addition, this breed gets along very well with other dogs and other animals.

Grooming and care

Having a semi-long hair and abundant undercoat, the Golden Retriever requires regular maintenance. A simple but good brushing thoroughly once a week and a bath once a month (or two) should be sufficient to properly maintain its fur and avoid getting hair all over your house. This type of dog undergoes a significant shedding period normally twice a year, usually in the spring and fall. When giving a bath, it will be very important to dry your Golden Retriever very well with a professional dryer to help get the dead hair out and remove all the moisture from the undercoat to prevent skin problems.
