Advice dogs - Living with your puppy

Your obligations as master

Regardless of the breed, dogs need to be taken care of, including on weekends and during holidays. In fact, they need their master's time, care and affection throughout their lives.

Dogs are very active creatures. Walks need to be more than quick trips to the nearest fire hydrant for relief. If you don't provide enough physical or intellectual stimulation, such as those provided by training or games, you're likely to encounter behaviour problems, such as chewing on the furniture.

Because dogs are social animals, they need encounters with other living creatures. They also need to be involved as much as possible in the comings and goings of their “family”: errands, trips in the car, contact with other people, and so on. It's also worth noting that by the time a puppy reaches four or five months of age, it should already have seen and heard everything it will likely encounter in its lifetime, such as other dogs, cats, children, thunder, umbrellas and bicycles.

Follow the basic dog training rules yourself by adopting a consistent behaviour. Don't permit something one day and forbid it the next. For example, it's tempting to let your cute little puppy sleep in your bed or that of your children, but that puppy will grow up one day. If you allow it to jump into bed with you as a puppy, it won't understand why it can't do it once it becomes an adult. You need to be firm, but patient and attentive. That's how to maintain the bond of trust that you create over time.
