Why choose quality food?
Lower risk of urinary tract problems:
Quality food contains very little magnesium, a mineral that can contribute to feline urological problems.
Better health:
With superior-grade ingredients, your cat will have more energy, better muscle tone and better overall health.
Smaller portions:
With premium food, your cat needs to eat less to get all the nutrients needed for good health. In the end, you save money, because every bag lasts longer.
Fewer odours in the litter box:
Eating less means defecating less, so the litter box won't smell as much. Top-of-the-line foods also contain ingredients like Yucca schidigera, which helps reduce unpleasant odours.
Hair loss:
High-quality food promotes healthy skin and a shiny coat, resulting in less hair loss.
Easy transition:
Not only does it take cats some time to get accustomed to the taste of a new food, but their digestive system is also not designed to deal with abrupt changes in diet. The best way to ease the transition is to mix the new food with your cat's usual food incrementally over a three-week period. For the first week, the proportion should be one quarter new food to three quarters usual food. By the fourth week, your cat should be receiving only the new food.
No table scraps:
Food that people eat does not provide the nutrition cats need, and in fact, it may do them more harm than good. Moreover, giving your cat food off your plate can lead to undesirable behaviours, such as begging at the table. If you want to give your cat a treat, it's better to provide specially designed cat snacks.
Which formula is best for my cat?
Kittens
Kittens need to be given kitten food until the end of their growth phase, at around 12 months, even if they're going to be sterilized. Kitten food contains ingredients that contribute to proper growth.
Very active, pregnant or nursing cats:
Kitten food is ideal and necessary for these cats. The ingredients it contains helps meet these cats' energy requirements; this is especially true for pregnant cats, whose requirements increase rapidly during gestation.
Adult cats:
Maintenance or adult cat food is the best option for adult cats. This formula helps maintain energy levels, yet without promoting overeating. Remember that you should always refer to the ration table on the package to determine how much food to give your cat each day.
Overweight cats:
Choose a light food with a low caloric content and ingredients that specifically promote weight loss.
Senior cats:
Foods for senior cats are specially designed for the needs of aging cats. They are low in calories and high in fibre, both of which will minimize the risk of obesity and stimulate intestinal movement. Cats should be transitioned to senior food at around seven or eight years of age.
